However, the group intends to diversify its crops production through vegetable production such as tomato using greenhouse technology. Mandera East Sub-county lies within the ASAL regions of Northern Kenya where agricultural production is low due to inadequate, erratic and unpredictable rainfall.
Koromey Self Help Farm Group have undertaken to establish 1 acre of vegetable farm to cushion the chronic vegetable problem prevailing in the whole location. The group intend to benefit from 1 green house and a drip irrigation kit from Islamic Relief for vegetable production. This technology will help educate farmers on higher outputs per unit area and efficient use of scarce water resources using drip irrigation. The project will require purchase of greenhouse equipments, drip kit, agricultural inputs e.
Seeds, Pesticides, Fungicides and other Protectants. The project will have direct impact on farm families and indirectly on community members who will be the end consumers of the product.
The group member composition is 14 M and 17F. About two greenhouses are anticipated to be constructed. The greenhouses will be run and managed by the members of the group. The overall goal is to increase production, income and alleviate poverty amongst the members. This will break down chronic reliance on relief food in the community.
Some of key outputs of the project are:- 1. High yields 2. Water economy 3. Fruit quality 4.
